As the only high school providing secondary education in the Olympic Gardens Community, Penwood High serves over 900 students each year. The profile of most of our students come from lower-income backgrounds, including communities such as Waterhouse, Waltham Park, Riverton City, Seaview Gardens and Spanish Town Road. Most parents are unemployed or self-employed.
Our student intake data generally shows that only 22% of our students are partially ready for secondary level education. Despite the challenges, a comparison of our student intake data versus exit exams have revealed improvements in most subject areas. While pass rates fluctuate for some subject areas, teachers are proud that students who enter the school unable to read, have been successful in achieving passes in regional and international examinations.
The Penwood High School family is constantly developing our students holistically by the sporting disciplines the school offers which includes athletics, netball , football, cricket, squash and taekwondo. Additionally, our students are exposed to enrichment activities in the form of clubs and societies, some of which includes; Performing Arts Society, Penwood Choir, Drum Core, Mathematics Club, ISCF, Cadet Core, Fitness Club, Environmental Club and the Sign Language Society.
The challenge we are faced with in meeting our objective of developing our students is that we are unable to finance the transportation cost of the many field trips, school tours and sporting competitions we desire to partake in. We believe a school bus would greatly help in alleviating this challenge. A maintenance programme has been developed to ensure the initiative is sustainable.
It is our belief that when our students are rounded individuals, it will have a positive impact on their behaviour. This will allow them to be more disciplined thereby increasing their academic output. This will ultimately result in them becoming productive citizens.
Calling all Penwood Alumni to come on baord and donate to help us get the bus. As the past student association president, I firmly believe that if each past student and the wider community donate, we can accomplish our goal. Let us walk this path of #Renew #Restore #Reassure
