In Summer 2017, eight high school boys were recruited by ‘mom and pop’ music, songwriting and production team, Carol Dwyer (née Dexter) and Rohan Dwyer, to be a part of Jamaica’s first real boy band. Seven years and a few band members later, Adrian, George, Jhada, Moses, Matthew, Dimetri and Alex, are still thrilling music lovers globally as the band, 8.

High energy, acoustic and chill, you name it, 8 delivers. With an unmistakable style that could be described as Silk Sonic meets Bob Marley and the Wailers, they create, play and merge music of many genres infused with the intrinsic magic of Jamaica. A repertoire spanning music of several decades and crossing all genres, as well as incredible originals, all performed with crisp choreography, is a winning combination that makes up the incomparable and distinct delivery of 8, whether you hear them or see them in action. Each member contributes vocally to the tonal quality of the sound, and most play multiple instruments.

The band has dropped several singles and unofficial releases such as School Boy Anthem (2017), Do Over (2018), Could You Be Love (Bob Marley & The Wailers cover – 2019), Mama Song (2019). Brand New Feeling (2020), Universal Love (2020), Guilty (2021), High Note (2022), #NOFILTER (2022), Fake News (2022), Hennessi (2023), and in 2024 the band supported newcomer, Alex, laying instrumental and vocal tracks for the single Jah Love This Land which was a top ten finalist in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s National Festival Song Competition.

They’ve opened for the late reggae icon, Toots Hibbert, and the legendary Jamaican band, Chalice, among others, performed on the JaRIA Awards 2021, and have done numerous exclusive performances at Chris Blackwell’s Golden Eye Resort. In early 2021, 8 landed a winner’s spot in the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Band Quest, and kicked off the comeback of the renowned music festival to rave reviews. “…a tight, versatile and smooth all-boy aggregation [who] took command of the stage [and] received big nods of approval from the viewers for their on-point harmonies, [and] great original music…”. The Jamaica Observer also highlights, “8 is another set of young singers and musicians to watch…Their impressive tone shows that they have put in the work, and slick choreography only helped to accentuate a rounded playlist.”

The band has also won awards for Outstanding Artistic Presentation in Music and Musicianship (Jamaica Youth Empowerment Awards 2017), a gold medal in the World Championships for the Performing Arts (WCOPA, Group/Ensemble category) LA, California (2020), and the Rising Idols title on streaming platform Sessions Live in June 2021, which earned them a billboard in LA, California, among other prizes. They were also featured performers on the Commonwealth Youth Awards for 2022.

More recently, 8, with the help of production sponsors, started its own monthly show at its home base, which features local emerging artists and others from the Caribbean region. Started in October 2022, the production titled Grass, Roots and Blankets, has been deemed a huge success by patrons who’ve attended. The band continues to entertain across the island in corporate and other private and public settings. “We just want to make, play and sing good music for the world to hear, and bring good vibes. We want to be the GR8EST band this world has ever seen.” — Adrian Bacchus (band leader)
