Melisa is a human trafficking survivor whose life has been marked by extraordinary hardship, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to God and her children.
Born in Jamaica, Melisa’s life changed before she was even two years old. At just 1 year and 8 months old, she was taken from her mother and sold by her father and grandmother to a woman from Bermuda. The woman brought Melisa to Bermuda, illegally adopted her, and subjected her to years of physical, emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse within a controlling cult environment until she turned 18.
Melisa’s biological mother had no idea what was truly happening. She had been pressured into signing documents against her will and was falsely promised that Melisa was not being adopted and that she would see her every year. That promise was never kept.
At 21 years old, Melisa fled Bermuda and returned to Jamaica, trying to escape the life she had endured for so long. It was then that she learned the heartbreaking truth—that she had been sold as a child. When she began asking questions about what happened, her family distanced themselves rather than confronting the painful truth.
Despite everything she survived, Melisa has worked hard to rebuild her life and raise her two daughters with love and God’s protection.
Recently, Melisa and her teenage daughters have been facing another difficult chapter. After Hurricane Melissa, the home they were preparing to move into from a temporary guesthouse became unsuitable for living due to the storm’s effects, leaving them without stable housing.
On top of this, Melisa had already lost all of her furniture after living in a home with severe leaking that the landlord refused to repair.
Since the hurricane disrupted their housing plans, Melisa has exhausted her resources paying for hotels and Airbnbs just to keep a roof over her daughters’ heads. The constant moving and uncertainty has been overwhelming for them.
Melisa’s greatest hope is simple: to secure a stable home where she and her daughters can finally settle, rebuild, and no longer live with the fear of not knowing where they will stay next.
Melisa is not asking for luxury—only stability. She simply wants a safe and consistent home where her daughters can feel secure and no longer worry about where they will sleep next.
